Special Events May Saturday, May 3, 2008 -- 10:00am Join Compeer and CMHC as we walk in support of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). 'NAMI WALKS for the Mind of America' is a fundraising and awareness-raising component of NAMI’s Campaign for the Mind of America that is being held this year in 74 communities around the country. The proceeds from the WALK will be used by NAMI of Johnson County to provide support to and advocate for persons with serious mental illness and their families, to support educational programs for consumers, their families and the general public about mental illness. Recovery is possible as long as adequate treatment is assessable to these individuals who need it most. Everyone deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy and happy life. Walkers are able to bring their dogs along if desired - just make sure they are leashed and do well in public places. Hope to see you there! Location: Lower City Park (by the pond) Iowa City, IA Date: May 3, 2008 Distance: 5K Check-in: 9:00am Start time: 10:00am Saturday, May 31, 2008 -- 9:00am Compeer Volunteer Training -- Please meet at 507 E. Those who have already attended a training session need not attend again. June Monday, June 9, 2008 -- 3:00pm Join us for the Volunteer Support Group at Joyce Carman's house. The support group is held every three months, and it gives the volunteers a chance to meet and mingle with other Compeer volunteers. Light snacks will be provided. Meetings are held at Joyce Carman's home -- 34 Seventh Avenue North, Iowa City (between Glendale & Rochester). Ongoing events: NAMI at U of Iowa Mental Illness Awareness Film Series -- These event are free and open to the public. Free popcorn and soda will be provided. Location for all movies: IMU on U of Iowa campus, Illinois Room (348). This would be a great way to spend time with your friend, and you may become more educated about mental illness in the process -- BONUS!
