Compeer CORPS
In 2011 Compeer of Johnson County became the second Compeer Program in the United States to implement a CompeerCORPS Program. The outpatient VA Mental Health Clinic refers clients who would benefit from, and could commit to, a one-on-one friendship with a volunteer Veteran. We recruit Vets of recent wars who will be matched with a client with whom they share interests, who is also a Vet. Once matched, the friends become part of the Compeer community. The Vets who are paired or waiting for a pair in this Vet2Vet Program are invited to participate in all of the Compeer activities. |
|
Veterans who have successfully returned from combat to their community can offer unique support to a Veteran who is living with a mental illness. The military connection can make a big difference in the client’s recovery. If you are a Veteran who would like to volunteer to help a Vet living with mental illness reintegrate into your Johnson County community |

please click here to go to the volunteer application page. Once we have received your application we will invite you to participate in an interview with the Compeer director and the VA mental health professional. After the interview, background and references checks, and Volunteer Training Workshop you will select the Veteran you would like to work with. Once all requirements are met, the Compeer director will make arrangements and introduce you to your new friend. Then you will begin to spend at least one hour a week together doing things that both of you enjoy. |
