Shelter House is a non-profit organization that has provided housing and supportive services to the homeless of Southeast Iowa since 1983.

Located on the South Side of Iowa City, Shelter House is Iowa's only general use homeless shelter. It provides transitional shelter to men, women, and children, including the disabled the elderly.

Text Box: 	The goal of our collaboration with Shelter house is to offer Compeer Friendships to chronically homeless clients who are receiving mental health treatment. Shelter House offers their STAR (Supported Training and Access to Resources) program, following clients for up to three years. The staff there agrees that Compeer friendships could offer vital support as clients endeavor to move from homelessness to transitional, to permanent housing. The commitment and support of a friend will enhance the probability of success.   
Text Box: 	The STAR Program assists persons who are chronically unemployed and homeless in Johnson County, to achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency through employment.
	The STAR Program recognizes barriers to employment and through the resources of the program works with the participant to decrease these inhibitors, such as, housing, mental health, substance abuse, vocational and life skills deficits, transportation, education, child care and medical needs.
	STAR clients, in collaboration with program staff, acquire and maintain jobs consistent with their preferences, strengths, and needs. Local agencies and businesses partner to provide supportive services, employability skills training and internships, paid through the program.
